There seems to be a plethora of good new TV series this season! I didn’t even know this existed until a co-worker mentioned it the other day, and I was very intrigued by the thought of a show based on the notorious Dr. Lecter. I figured it could be awesome if handled properly but had my doubts seeing how it was airing on NBC. (I figured a series based on Hannibal would have to be on an anything-goes pay channel to really flourish) A few minutes into the first episode I was already forgetting my trepidations however - this series has teeth. The gore level is high and the acting is top notch. Mads Mikkelson does a brilliant job portraying the genius cannibal, and Hugh Dancy is equally great as Special Agent Will Graham - the neurotic criminal profiler who is so good at empathizing with serial killers he has serious issues interacting with the general public. Graham is reluctantly pulled out of his reclusive lifestyle by Special Agent Jack Crawford (played by Laurence Fishburne!) when he needs help on a particularly difficult case, and ends up meeting for the first time another specialist called in by Jack - Dr. Hannibal Lecter. The two begin working together under Crawford’s employ, unaware that they are destined to become enemies. People familiar with the book or movie Red Dragon will know that Will Graham is the very person who ends up eventually exposing and catching Lecter at great personal cost. This series shows for the first time not only their first fateful encounter but the span of time afterwards and the unlikely friendship that develops between them, promising to end with their inevitable confrontation. (Seen at the beginning of Red Dragon.) The tension and atmosphere in this show is almost palpable. Another amusing tidbit worth mentioning is that every episode is named after a type of French cuisine (such as ‘aperitif’, ‘potage’ and ‘coquilles’ to name a few) which fans of Dr. Lecter should find thoroughly amusing. |

I’ve been really excited for this one since I first saw an ad for it on the back of Time Magazine a few months back, and finally got around to watching the pilot. It definitely exceeded my expectations. The production value, set designs and cinematography are all just breathtaking, and the characters and plot intriguing. While the story is definitely historical fiction (with a decidedly supernatural twist) about the ‘untold secret story’ of Leonardo Da Vinci’s early life, the creators went to great lengths to portray a believable 15th century Florence and populate it with characters who are mostly based on actual historical figures of the time. They also seem to be pulling no punches with content, portraying many of the cruel and disturbing things that went on in that time and place - including the unsavory crimes and corruption of the church and pope. And you can’t help but love Leo himself - the flamboyantly arrogant genius with a heart of gold, helplessly tormented by his overactive brain and inability to stem his ceaseless curiosity and burning need to understand the world around him. I can’t wait to see where this story goes. |
